In 2006, the Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) was established in order to create a comprehensive transportation network that could facilitate the transfer of passengers, minerals, petroleum, and petrochemicals between the northern, eastern, and central regions of Saudi Arabia. In February 2017, SAR launched the first regular passenger service between Riyadh and Al-Qassim, with trains travelling up to 200 km/h. SAR is aiming to extend this service all the way to Al-Qurrayat, a journey of over 1,400 kilometers from Riyadh.
